Two weeks after #EndSARS protests against police brutality started, president Muhammadu Buhari has finally addressed the issue. 

Much to the dismay of Nigerian citizens, and the world at large, Buhari's address offered little reassurance and empathy. It was filled with thinly veiled threats to protesters as overall tone of the speech appeared rather oppressive, he alluding to security forces smothering any future protests. 

“In the circumstances, I would like to appeal to protesters to note and take advantage of the various well-thought-out initiatives of this administration designed to make their lives better and more meaningful, and resist the temptation of being used by some subversive elements to cause chaos with the aim of truncating our nascent democracy,” Buhari said.

“For you to do otherwise will amount to undermining national security and the law and order situation. Under no circumstances will this be tolerated,” he added.

Most outstandingly, the president's speech which was pre-recorded, made no notice of the massacre at Lekki Toll Booth Oct. 20 when Nigerian security officials opened fire at unarmed and peaceful protesters. The shootings injured many and left several dead. The president's choice to totally discard the Lekki shootings from his address was in accordance with the military's refusal pf any wrongdoing notwithstanding graphic footage which showed otherwise.
