Addo Kufuor was born on October 27, 1943. He is a Ghanaian politician and businessman. He served as the president of Ghana from 2001 to 2009.

Kufuor graduated with a degree in economics from the University of Ghana before beginning his career as an economist at the Central Bank of Ghana, where he also served as Deputy Governor.

Kufuor also served as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission in Ghana alongside then-Governor Jerry Rawlings. In 1998, he resigned his position at IMF due to disagreements with Rawlings over economic policy.

In 2004, Kufuor successfully ran for president in elections that were widely criticized for being rigged by his opponent John Evans Atta Mills. Kufuor had won with 51% of votes cast, but this was not accepted by Atta Mills who contested the results and challenged them in court. The following year in 2005, a new constitution was written and adopted which many argue marked a transition from military rule to democracy.
