What Is a BVN and Why It Matters for Banking in Nigeria
12 October 2026 - Naira BriefingThe Bank Verification Number (BVN) is the single identity that ties all your Nigerian bank accounts to you. If you bank, receive money, trade FX or open a domiciliary account, you need one — and understanding it helps you bank safely.
What a BVN is
The BVN is an 11-digit number linked to your fingerprints and photo, issued once and shared across every bank. It means one verified identity across the system, rather than a separate unverified identity at each bank.
Why it matters
- It is required to open accounts, including dom accounts and most FX and fintech services.
- It helps banks fight fraud and link transactions to a real person.
- It lets you be found across banks — useful for dispute resolution and recovery.
Getting and checking yours
You enrol once at any bank branch (or some agents) with ID and biometrics. To check your BVN, dial *565*0# from the phone number linked to your bank account. Keep it private — a BVN is an identifier, not a password, but combined with other details it is useful to fraudsters, so treat requests for it with the same caution you’d use against a fake-alert scam.
