Palm Oil Production and Export in Nigeria Explained
13 October 2026 - Naira BriefingPalm oil is woven into Nigerian cooking and industry, and Nigeria was once the world’s top producer. Today it both produces and imports palm oil to meet demand — a trade gap paid for in dollars, which is why the market connects to the naira through the exchange rate.

The picture
- Production — smallholders and estates, mainly in the south.
- Local demand — food, soap and industrial uses.
- Imports and exports — still a net importer at times, with export upside.
Why the dollar matters
Global vegetable-oil prices are quoted in dollars, so both imports and any exports move with the exchange rate — the same economics as cocoa and cashew export. Raising local production would cut the import bill and could turn palm oil back into an export earner, with export finance to fund the scale-up.
