Gold Price Per Gram in Nigeria Today: How It’s Calculated in Naira

11 October 2026 - Naira Briefing

The gold price per gram in Nigeria isn’t set locally — it’s the international gold price (quoted in US dollars per ounce) converted to naira. So when either the global gold price or the dollar to naira rate moves, the naira price of gold moves with it.

How the naira price is calculated

Gold trades globally in troy ounces (about 31.1 grams). The per-gram naira price is roughly: (gold price in USD per ounce ÷ 31.1) × the current USD→NGN rate. That gives the spot value of pure gold — the baseline every dealer works from.

Purity changes the price

  • 24k is ~99.9% pure — the full spot value.
  • 22k is ~91.6% pure — about 0.916 of the 24k price.
  • 18k is 75% pure — about 0.75 of the 24k price.

Why a Lagos dealer quotes more

Jewellers and dealers add a premium for craftsmanship, refining, margin and risk, so a retail per-gram price sits above the pure spot calculation. The spot figure tells you the fair baseline; the premium is what you negotiate.
