Form M and Import Documentation in Nigeria, Explained
12 October 2026 - Naira BriefingAny Nigerian importing goods of commercial value meets Form M — the mandatory declaration that starts the import and FX process. Understanding it (and the documents around it) is the difference between smooth clearing and a container stuck at the port.
What Form M is
Form M is an electronic declaration of intent to import, filed through a bank on the trade portal before goods are shipped. It ties your import to an FX source and a product classification, and it is valid for a set period. It is the import counterpart to Form A, which covers invisibles like school fees.
The documents around it
- Proforma invoice from the supplier — the basis of the Form M.
- PAAR (Pre-Arrival Assessment Report) — issued by Customs after the Form M, setting duty.
- Bill of Lading / Airway Bill, packing list, and a product certificate where required.
Why it matters for FX and cost
The Form M links your import to how you will pay — and the exchange rate on the day feeds straight into your landed cost. Pair it with how to import from China and a clear view of the USD to Naira rate before you commit to an order.
