Car Import Duty and FX in Nigeria: What It Really Costs to Import a Car

11 October 2026 - Naira Briefing

Importing a car into Nigeria — often a UK- or US-used “Tokunbo” vehicle — has two big cost drivers: the import duty charged at the port, and the dollar cost of buying and shipping the car, converted at the current USD to naira rate.

How duty is assessed

Customs assess duty on the vehicle’s value, with levies and charges that vary by vehicle type, engine and age. Older vehicles can attract additional levies. Exact rates change with policy, so confirm current figures with a licensed clearing agent before you commit.

The FX side

  • The car’s purchase price abroad is in dollars (or pounds) — funded from naira.
  • Shipping and insurance are usually priced in foreign currency too.
  • A weaker naira raises the whole landed cost, even if the car’s sticker price hasn’t changed — the same dynamic as iPhone prices.

Estimating the total

Add the dollar price of the car and shipping, convert at the live USD to Naira rate, then add duty, clearing and local transport. That total is your realistic landed cost.
