cNGN: Nigeria’s Naira Stablecoin, Explained
12 October 2026 - Naira BriefingcNGN is a naira-backed stablecoin — a digital token designed to hold a value of one naira, backed by naira reserves. It is a different animal from both the eNaira and dollar stablecoins, and it is worth understanding what it is for.
How a naira stablecoin works
For every token in circulation, the issuer is meant to hold one naira (or equivalent) in reserve, so the token stays redeemable at par. It lives on public blockchains, which makes it programmable and easy to move — unlike cash or a bank transfer.
cNGN vs eNaira vs dollar stablecoins
- eNaira is a central-bank digital currency issued by the CBN itself.
- cNGN is a regulated private-sector naira stablecoin, aimed at developers, exchanges and cross-border settlement.
- USDT/USDC hold dollar value — a hedge against the naira, not a naira token. See stablecoins vs naira savings.
Why it could matter
A credible naira stablecoin could make moving naira in and out of crypto cheaper, speed up remittance settlement, and give exchanges a local on-ramp — all within the SEC digital-asset framework now taking shape. It is early, so treat it as infrastructure to watch, not a savings product.
