eNaira Explained: Nigeria’s Digital Currency and What It Does

11 October 2026 - Naira Briefing

How it works

You hold eNaira in a dedicated wallet and can send or receive it like a digital cash balance. Unlike money in a commercial bank app, eNaira is a direct liability of the central bank — closer to holding digital cash than a bank deposit.

eNaira vs bank apps vs stablecoins

  • Bank apps / wallets move your existing naira deposits — see Opay vs PalmPay vs Moniepoint.
  • eNaira is central-bank digital naira, still worth exactly one naira.
  • Stablecoins like USDT are dollar-pegged, which is why many Nigerians prefer them to hold value.

Is it worth using?

Adoption has been limited, and for most people everyday wallets already do the job. The eNaira doesn’t protect against naira depreciation — it is still naira. To hold value against the dollar, people look to FX or stablecoins instead.
