How to Avoid P2P Scams in Nigeria When Trading Crypto
11 October 2026 - Naira BriefingPeer-to-peer (P2P) trading is how most Nigerians buy and sell USDT and Bitcoin — and it’s also where the scams are. The good news: almost every P2P scam relies on one of a few tricks, and they’re easy to defend against.

The golden rule
Only release crypto after the naira has actually cleared in your bank account — not when you see an alert, an SMS, or a “proof of payment” screenshot. Alerts and screenshots are trivially faked; a cleared balance is not.
Common tricks to know
- Fake payment proof — a doctored receipt or a reversed transfer. Verify in your own banking app.
- Chargeback scams — the buyer pays, you release, then they reverse the transfer. Prefer traders with long history and high completion.
- Off-platform moves — anyone asking you to release outside escrow or chat off-platform is a red flag.
- Wrong-name payments — the sender name must match the trader; mismatches can mean stolen funds.
When to skip P2P
For large amounts, the safest route is a trusted desk that trades at an agreed rate with no counterparty risk to you — no vetting strangers, no chargeback exposure.
