How the Nigerian FX Market Works, Explained

12 October 2026 - Naira Briefing

“The exchange rate” sounds like one number, but it comes out of a layered market with several moving parts. Knowing who sits where helps you understand why the rate you get depends on which part you use.

The layers of the market

  • The official window (NAFEM) — where banks, exporters and big players trade and the quoted official rate is discovered.
  • Banks — which price FX for customers off that window.
  • Bureaux de change — licensed cash dealers, covered in our BDC guide.
  • The parallel market — street and P2P demand the official window doesn’t meet.

How a rate is formed

Supply (oil earnings, remittances, investment, exports) meets demand (imports, travel, savings). When the official window can’t meet demand, more of it spills into the parallel market, widening the gap. The USD to Naira rate is the reference everyone watches.
