DeFi vs CeFi for Nigerians, Explained
12 October 2026 - Naira BriefingIn crypto you’ll hear CeFi (centralised finance) and DeFi (decentralised finance). The difference comes down to one question: does a company hold your money, or do you hold it yourself? Each has real trade-offs for Nigerians.
CeFi: a company holds it
Centralised exchanges and apps (the exchanges most people use) hold your funds, handle security, and give you support and an easy naira on-ramp. The trade-off: you trust the platform, and it can freeze withdrawals or fail. Convenient, but not truly yours.
DeFi: you hold it
DeFi runs on smart contracts with no company in the middle — you keep your own keys and interact directly. More control and often more options, but you carry the full risk: a lost key or a smart-contract exploit has no helpline. The yield risks are real, too (see stablecoin yield risks).
Which should you use?
- New to crypto, or need naira in and out easily? CeFi is simpler and safer to start.
- Want full control and understand the risks? DeFi gives it — with no safety net.
- Either way, keep records for tax and never risk more than you can lose.
